Hyundai Signs Electricity, Equipment Suppliers for U.S. Mill

According to Danieli, the contract includes two electric arc furnaces with secondary metallurgy, two thick slab casters, and two slab reheating furnaces. Additionally, Danieli and ENERGIRON consortium partner Tenova will provide the direct-reduction plant.

Danieli said the EAFs will be equipped with a Zerobucket ECS® continuous scrap charging system capable of conveying scrap and hot and cold DRI. The secondary metallurgy equipment includes two twin-ladle furnaces and one twin RH-OB system with a material handling system and fume treatment plants, Danieli said.

The furnaces will feed the casting area at a production rate of nearly 2.9 million metric tons annually.

Danieli said the slab casters will feature 3Q technologies made to produce conventional thick slabs for grades including low-carbon-emissions steel. The two walking beam reheating furnaces have a capacity of about 280 metric tons hourly. They are designed for operation with natural gas and hydrogen mixtures up to 100%.

The DRI plant will be designed to annually produce 2.5 million metric tons of hot and cold DRI. The hot DRI will convey through a HYTEMP pneumatic transport system to the steelmaking shop.

“It is an important technological achievement for us to provide a system that is flexible for the use of gas and capable of feeding two EAFs with an intrinsically safe and reliable solution such as HYTEMP,” said Marco Lapasin, vice president of Danieli Centro Metallics.

The DRI produced will have about 94% metallization and 2.5% carbon content. The plant will have carbon capture technology and the ability to use hydrogen as a reducing gas.

In a separate development, HYUNDAI-POSCO has finalized an electric service agreement with Entergy Louisiana, a public utility serving 58 Louisiana parishes.

“Entering into this agreement with Entergy Louisiana marks an important milestone in bringing our low carbon emitting integrated steel mill to life,” said Chul Soon Jang, HYUNDAI-POSCO Louisiana Steel president.

“Reliable, affordable and forward looking energy service is essential to our vision, and Entergy’s partnership gives us the confidence to invest boldly in Louisiana. This facility represents a major step in strengthening our North American supply chain, advancing next generation steel production and contributing to economic growth in the region.”
