Iberdrola Supplies Solar Energy to Salzgitter for Green Steel Production
01/09/2026 - Iberdrola Germany announced its newly completed solar plant in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, will supply energy to Salzgitter AG to support its transition to green steel production.
Salzgitter AG will purchase all the electricity generated to be integrated into its steel production, the company said. It is part of a 15-year power purchase agreement signed by both companies for the supply of 900 GWh throughout the period.
“The Salzgitter Group relies on strong partnerships for its SALCOS® – Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking program. These robust networks help establish the essential foundations for implementing low-CO₂ production processes and products,” said Ralph Schaper, head of energy management at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.
The new solar park plant covers 45 hectares and is comprised of more than 92,000 solar modules. It has an estimated capacity of 65 MWp and an annual production of around 60 gigawatt hours.
“We are demonstrating that the combination of strong partners, modern technology and long-term industrial cooperation is driving the energy transition forward in a concrete way,” said Felipe Montero, managing director of Iberdrola Germany.
The company expects the solar plant will provide enough renewable energy to power more than 20,000 households, reducing CO2 emissions by 23,000 metric tons annually.
