Investors Said to be Discussing Republic Steel Mill Restart
11/21/2025 - Overseas steelmakers are eying an investment in the idled Republic Steel facility in Lorain, Ohio, USA, according to the city’s mayor.
In a press release, Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley said Republic Steel parent Grupo Simec “has engaged in encouraging discussions with several international steel producers interested in establishing operations in Lorain.”
Bradley told The (Elyria, Ohio) Chronicle-Telegram newspaper that Grupo Simec is in talks with two investors, which are looking at buying or leasing the site, or establishing a joint venture.
“We are encouraged by the strong interest shown in Lorain as a site for renewed steel production. Republic Steel has been working with (a local utility) to guarantee that sufficient power can be delivered for steel production in Lorain. The City of Lorain will continue to collaborate closely with Grupo Simec and prospective steel partners as discussions advance,” Bradley said
