JFE Steel to Blow in Blast Furnace at West Japan Works

JFE Steel Corp.’s No. 3 blast furnace at the West Japan Works (Kurashiki)—currently undergoing a revamping that started in October—will be blown in for a fourth operating cycle beginning in mid-February 2010.

JFE Steel expects industries such as automotive to continue ordering high-end steel at relatively high levels. That is why the company plans to promptly restart its blast furnace following the revamp; it expects to capitalize on the growing demand from domestic and international customers, especially in Asia.

The cost of the revamping project, which will increase inner volume from 4359 m3 to 5055 m3, is about 30 billion yen.
