Jindal Steel Turns to Danieli for Second Hydrogen-Ready DRI Plant
09/16/2025 - Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of Jindal Steel Group, once again turned to Danieli for a second hydrogen-ready direct reduced iron (DRI) plant for hot briquetted iron (HBI) to be installed in Duqm, Oman.
Danieli said the new DRI plant will have Zero-Reformer Energiron® direct reduction technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli. Energiron can operate with natural gas and up to 80% hydrogen, or any mix of the two, without any plant modifications.
The companies estimate the plant will produce 2.5 million metric tons annually of DRI, achieving an average metallization rate of 94%. The hot DRI will be briquetted to produce HBI to be either stored or exported.
The design could potentially implement the Hytemp® pneumatic transport system to feed hot DRI at more than 600°C directly to the electric arc furnace (EAF) for an energy-efficient process.
The company said carbon capture facilities will allow for the reuse of the captured carbon and will be integrated into Jindal Steel Duqm’s larger, green steel complex.
The first DRI plant is currently under construction and scheduled for start-up in 2026.
