KOBE Steel Achieves 25% Reduction of CO2 Emissions From Blast Furnace
10/19/2023 - Japan’s Kobe Steel Ltd. announced this week that a demonstration test at its Kakogawa works has successfully reduced CO2 emissions by 25% from a large blast furnace.
The test was conducted from April to June this year. It was found that the reducing agent rate could be reduced to 386 kg/ton hot metal by charging large amounts of hot briquetted iron (HBI) produced by the MIDREX® Process.
According to KOBE Steel, the results “prove that this technology can reduce CO2 emissions by 25% compared to a conventional method.”
The test also revealed that a significantly reduced coke rate (230 kg/ton hot metal) could be achieved.
