Krakatau Posco recently signed an MOU with Sookmyung Women’s University, pledging to support the development of the local female workforce as a responsible corporate citizen.
Initially proposed in August by Professor Choi Dong-soo while visiting Cilegon to tour the construction site for the integrated steel mill, the new agreement features a scholarship program for high-school graduates in the Banteun province; a student exchange program between the local university and Sookmyung University; and foundation of the Sookmyung Cultural Center to promote cultural exchange and Korean culture. The agreement also includes provision for joint projects on shared interests as well as projects funded by ODA programs.
The Banteun province — the only region in Indonesia with a female governor — is known for its strong interest in encouraging the development of its female workforce. Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah sent a message of encouragement, noting that the program will provide a good opportunity for local women, of which the majority stay at home and face difficulties in entering the workforce. Governor Chosiyah hoped that Krakatau Posco would lead a good example for other investors and contribute to fostering a cooperative investment environment.
The MOU signing event was attended by some 40 guests including Chief of Knowledge and Information Lee Ki-suk of Sookmyung University, Professor Choi Dong-joo of the School of Global Service. Director Pohan of Krakatau Steel, representatives from the Cilegon Education Bureau, representatives from women’s rights groups, and faculty members from Institue Pertanian Bogor and other local schools.
Krakatau Posco said it is hopeful the MOU highlights Posco’s activities as a responsible corporate citizen and commitment as a joint partner, ultimately raising the company’s profile in the local community.
