Mechel Begins Next Phase of Technological Modernization at VMZ

Mechel OAO subsidiary Vyartsilya Metal Products Plant ZAO has signed an agreement with German-based Ernst Koch GmbH under which Koch will supply and install a new straight-flow KGT 25/47 type drawing mill for the Vyartsilya Metal Products Plant (VMZ).

The Vyartsilya plant will use its new straight-flow sevenfold drawing mill to produce 2.0- to 7.0-mm diameter low-carbon wire in coils of up to 3 tonnes. Technical advantages that will help to facilitate high rates of productivity include an intensive refrigerating system and computerization of the quality control system.

The new mill will also enable the facility to increase its monthly average output volume by 1.5 thousand tonnes. It will also allow the facility to increase product quality, reduce production costs, and improve working conditions for the equipment operators.

Preparation for installation of the new equipment is being carried out at VMZ. In addition, specialists are being trained to properly operate the mill at Mechel’s Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant in Beloretsk, Russia.

In line with the investment program for VMZ, several new nail-making machines have been commissioned. The new machines will help the plant improve its production quality and effectiveness. The mill for unoiled wire production (a new high margin product, which is being exported by the Mechel’s subsidiary) was also modernized.

Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and metals companies, unites producers of coal, iron ore, nickel, steel, rolled products, and hardware. Mechel products are marketed domestically and internationally.
