Mechel Enters Collaboration with Danieli for CMP Upgrade

Mechel OAO has entered an agreement with Danieli for the modernization of Mechel's steel operations at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (CMP), Mechel's major steel producing subsidiary.

As part of the agreement, Danieli will re-equip CMP's electric arc furnace No. 6 and modernize its continuous caster to increase productivity to 1.2 million tonnes of slabs annually. Danieli will also commission a ladle furnace and a vacuum vessel.

Implementation of this project will allow Mechel to increase its output of stainless and construction steel products, improve quality, and reduce production costs.

Mechel and Danieli history of collaboration includes projects for two one-million-tonne/year continuous casting machines that were successfully commissioned over the last three years. Their startup was part of Mechel’s strategic objective to convert its steelmaking operations to continuous casting technology and thus improve steel segment performance.

“Mechel's long-term technical re-equipment program is based on state-of- the-art technologies in the field of steel production,” said Mechel Management CEO Vladimir Polin. “We are confident that collaboration with world-leading equipment engineering companies such as Danieli will enable Mechel to achieve its strategic objectives set to improve the performance of its steel segment by implementing modern technologies for steel melting and casting, as well as modernizing its rolling production and finishing.”

Mechel, one of Russia’s leading mining and metals companies, unites producers of coal, iron ore, nickel, steel, rolled products, and hardware. Mechel products are marketed domestically and internationally.
