Mechel Launches New Product at Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant
04/15/2009 - Mechel OAO’s Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant OAO subsidiary commences commercial production of steel ropes manufactured from plastically drafted strands.
Mechel OAO’s Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant OAO subsidiary (BMP OAO) has commenced commercial production of steel ropes manufactured from plastically drafted strands.
The steel ropes are manufactured from plastically drafted strands ranging in diameter from 25 to 57 mm. This construction allows the new product to offer high structural density and tensile strength, durability of wires in strands and strands in ropes, and low wear for sheaves and reels due to a larger area of contact with a rope’s bearing surface.
Steel ropes made from plastically drafted strands offer a lifetime that is 1.5 times longer than conventional ropes. Such ropes can be used in a range of applications such as open mine excavators, mine hoists, tower and hoisting cranes, oil production, etc.
Before launching the new product and manufacturing pilot lots, the company carried out computer-aided calculation of the rope’s geometry. The first lots of the steel ropes were shipped to Mechel’s subsidiaries, Korshunov Mining Plant OAO and Southern Kuzbass OAO, for evaluation, where their quality generated positive feedback. The products also underwent regular tests of mechanical and physical properties in the plant’s lab, with all plastically drafted rope samples conforming to master data.
Mechel said that a number of Russian mining, oil and gas producing plants, as well as machine building and fishing companies have already expressed their interest in buying ropes from plastically drafted strands.
