Miebach Receives Order From Tata Steel UK for Laser Welding Machine

The company said the machine features fully automated operation with process stability, low coil changeover times and high availability. It can handle strip thicknesses ranging from 1.4 to 6.2 mm. The weld seams can be reliably rolled in the subsequent tandem cold rolling mill. The coil-to-coil joining process also contributes to the line’s efficiency.

“Our 1.8Mt cutting-edge pickling line is a critical part of steel processing and central to our wider investment in low-CO2 steelmaking at Port Talbot,” said Andrew McGregor, program manager, CAPEX – Mills at Tata Steel UK.

The project is part of a £1.25 billion investment program, with £500 million coming from U.K. government funding.

Miebach said it supports decarbonization of steel production and contributes to Tata Steel’s objective of sustainable steel solutions; they estimate CO2 emissions will lower by 90%.

“Bringing Miebach on board is another important step forward for our team of global experts delivering the pickle line. Their advanced laser welding technology will play a vital role in dri¬ving efficiency and helping lay the foundations for sustainable steelmaking in the U.K. for gene¬rations to come,” McGregor said.

The companies said commissioning of the pickling line is scheduled for 2028.
