MMK Commissions Secondary Steel Treatment Complex
02/22/2010 - Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works has commissioned a new secondary steel treatment complex at its Oxygen Converter Shop that will facilitate the production of steel grades for high-quality pipes and automotive steel.
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) commissioned a new secondary steel treatment complex at its Oxygen Converter Shop.
The new state-of-the-art high-tech complex will allow MMK to produce steel grades for high-quality pipes and automotive steel with carbon content to 0.003%, sulfur content up to 0.001%, and strength characteristics up to X120. Once it is commissioned, the company will be capable of casting two million tonnes of crude steel per annum at continuous slab casting machine No. 6 for the production of thick plates at Plate Mill 5000.
The new complex also features a modern dust and gas suppression system that will allow the company to decrease emissions at the oxygen converter shop.
MMK and SMS MEVAC signed the equipment supply contract for the complex in July, 2007. Project engineering was carried out by OJSC “Magnitogorsk Gipromez”, and general contractors for the project included OJSC “Prokatmontazh”, OJSC “Stroitelny Komplex”, and OJSC “PO Montazhnik”.
OJSC MMK is among the world's largest steel producers and is one of the leaders of Russia's steel industry. The company's operations in Russia include a large steel-producing complex encompassing the entire production chain, from preparation of iron ore to downstream processing of rolled steel. MMK turns out a broad range of steel products with a predominant share of higher value added goods. In 2009 the company produced 9.6 mm tonnes of crude steel and 8.8 million tonnes of commercial steel products. MMK Group revenues in 2008 stood at USD 10.55 bn.
