Nakamura Signs FAC for Open-Die Forging Press From SMS group
01/13/2026 - SMS group announced it has received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) from Nakamura Iron Works for the commissioning of an ultrahigh-speed 12.5 MN open-die forging press at its Komaki City site in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
SMS group said the new press increases production capacity for higher throughput, better consistency, and lower operating and maintenance costs. It has the ability for up to 205 strokes per minute to form alloys including Inconel, titanium and copper.
The press has SMS hydraulic compact drive technology which offers energy savings and a 50% lower installation footprint. The SMS ForgeBase technology allows Nakamura to precalculate pass schedules and implement forging strategies from a database of over 200 materials. It supports automatic operation and a seamless switchover to semiautomatic or manual modes.
SMS group also supplied a digital package as a software-as-a-service. It includes SMS-Metrics for process data acquisition and Smart Alarm for plant fault monitoring.
“The combination of high-speed mechanical performance, compact, energy-efficient drives and digital tools enhances Nakamura’s ability to produce temperature-sensitive forgings at higher throughput,” said Alexander Schander, head of sales forging presses at SMS.
The FAC confirms all targets have been met and the project is now complete.
