New World Record: TOSYALI Algerie Achieves Highest DRI Production on Single Module
01/28/2026 - MIDREX announced the plant it supplied to TOSYALI Algerie A.Ş. with consortium partner Paul Wurth, part of SMS group, Module 2, has set a new world record for most direct reduced iron (DRI) production by a single direct reduction module in a year.
MIDREX said that Module 2 produced 2.43 million metric tons of DRI during its first year of operation, setting the new world record. In addition to the world record, TOSYALI Algerie’s first DRI module ranked third globally.
“Thanks to the advanced technology it uses, the second DRI facility became the first plant in the world to start commercial production with the capability of operating on both natural gas and — through a minor modification — 100% hydrogen,” said Fuat Tosyali, the Tosyali Holding chairman of the board.
TOSYALI’s second DRI plant has a new electric arc furnace (EAF) which is integrated with a hot transport conveyor. This allows hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) to be continuously charged into the EAF. During EAF maintenance or outages, the plant can switch to producing cold DRI at full capacity, MIDREX said.
“On behalf of SMS group, I congratulate TOSYALI Algerie on achieving this outstanding result, and we are proud that our engineering expertise supported this milestone and contributed to a project that enhances Algeria’s steelmaking capabilities and supports the industry’s ongoing decarbonization efforts,” said Thomas Handmann, chief technical officer of SMS group.
