NLMK Upgrades Steelmaking Facilities

Novolipetsk Steel has resumed production at its converter #2 after the upgrade of an emission system in the BOF shop #1.

The project, completed in 107 days, included the installation of 1500 tonnes of steel structures. NLMK upgraded its converter #1 prior to this project, and it plans to begin the upgrade of converter #3 in March 2010. Total investments in the BOF shop #1 revamp amounted to RUB6.7 billion.

This upgrade is part of the second stage of the Technical Upgrade Program, in conjunction with engineering company Siemens VAI. NLMK says that the key objective of the modernization of the Lipetsk steelmaking operations is the installation of modern aspiration systems.

NLMK plans to upgrade all 3 converters in BOF shop #1 by adding a bag filters system that enables the collection of secondary metallurgical gas emissions and dust. The company expects the implementation of the system to reduce BOF emissions by 59% at NLMK’s main production site in Lipetsk and to significantly improve working conditions for BOF operational employees.

The second stage of NLMK's Technical Upgrade Program from 2007 to 2011 foresees an increase in crude steel output at the Lipetsk plant from 9 to 12.4 million tonnes per year.
