Outokumpu Inaugurates Acid Regeneration Plant at Avesta

Outokumpu has inaugurated its state-of-the-art plant for acid regeneration in Avesta, Sweden. The plant will employ new processes for recycling that will allow nitrate emissions to the river Dalälven to be reduced to one third of previous levels.

The new regeneration plant will recycle acid used in the facility’s annealing and pickling line using an energy-saving recycling process based on filtration. Over 95% of the acid can now be reused in the production, which will help the plant to dramatically reduce its use of new acid. The plant also separates out metals that can be reused in the steelworks as raw material, resulting in less waste being sent to landfill.

“Up to 90% of Outokumpu's stainless special grades are made out of recycled steel,” said Jacob Sandberg, Site Manager at Outokumpu in Avesta. “The environmental aspects of our operations are very important to us and our stakeholders.”

The project, which was completed for a total investment of EUR 28 million, was started in March 2009.
