Outokumpu has been contracted to deliver special stainless quarto plates to the new World Trade Center transit terminal, named Oculus, in New York at Ground Zero.
The transit terminal project is one part of the total Ground Zero reconstruction plans. Constructing the terminal using quarto plates made out of Outokumpu's proprietary high strength LDX 2101® duplex stainless steel will allow the terminal to feature a thinner, stronger and more cost efficient design.
In support of the project, Outokumpu will deliver approximately 340 tonnes of stainless steel quarto plates to Cimolai Spa of Italy. Cimolai Spa, one of the main steel manufacturers of the Oculus project, is responsible for fabrication of the new transit center’s lower supporting structure.
Outokumpu will produce the plates at its quarto plate unit in Degerfors, Sweden. The quarto plates will be welded between carbon steel components to act as a thermal barrier and thus prevent excessive length expansion and tension in the lower supporting part of the structure.
"Based on the advice from Outokumpu's technical experts, we chose LDX 2101® due to the better mechanical and corrosion resistance properties compared to standard austenitic stainless steel grades,” said Cimolai Spa's representative. “Also, we have good experience in forming and welding LDX 2101® from our previous deal with Outokumpu where we supplied LDX 2101® to a monument in Mexico City.”
According to Outokumpu, the use of duplex quarto plates in demanding construction projects is increasing in popularity. The corrosion resistant high strength duplex grades offer considerable material weight savings and also lower overall life cycle costs to customers.
Outokumpu is a global leader in stainless steel with the vision to be the undisputed number one. Outokumpu also is a global leader in quarto plates with a global market share of some 20%. The Group employs some 8000 people in more than 30 countries, and its head office is located in Espoo, Finland.
