Outokumpu Unveils New Agglomeration Plant for Biocoke
08/18/2026 - Outokumpu announced it has inaugurated its new agglomeration plant in Tornio, Finland, allowing for replacement of fossil coke with biomass-based biocoke in ferrochrome production.
“This investment is a concrete step forward in our efforts to reduce the climate impact of our operations. Biocoke production has already started in Tornio, and biocoke has been produced both for our own use and for external customers,” said Juha Erkkilä, head of Outokumpu EvoCarbon.
The plant processes biochar into biocoke which can be used in ferrochrome production to replace fossil coke. The company said they invested about EUR30 million on the project with the intention to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions and develop low-carbon stainless steel production. They estimate the plant will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 82,000 metric tons annually.
