Posco’s Gwangyang Steel Plates Certified by EU Safety Standards

Posco announced that eighteen steel plate products manufactured at the company’s Gwangyang Steel Works recently obtained the CE-Mark, or the European Safety Certification, under the Construction Products Directive (CPD).

The CE-Mark is mandatory for non-European sellers to export construction steel plate products to Europe. Posco was initially granted approval in 2009 for certification of steel plates manufactured at the company’s Pohang Steel Works.

Posco recently applied for certification for steel plates produced at its newly launched steel plate manufacturing plant at Gwangyang as a means to efficiently allocate production volume between the two steel works. Efforts have been carried out since February by the Quality Management Group - which worked with the Quality Technology Department and Steel Plate Department at Gwangyang - to prepare for the examination process.

After successful rounds of field inspections, followed by a final review by a certification examiner, Gwangyang Steel Works received the official certification document in March. This is expected to facilitate efficient production allocation with Pohang Steel Works and expand exports to European markets as well as to countries outside Europe that apply CE-Mark certification standard, such as Singapore.

The CE-Mark is a mandatory safety certification standard that indicates the products’ and manufacturers’ capability to meet certain certification requirements. Certification is classified into several categories, including the Construction Products Directive, PED and MED.
