POSCO, Hyundai Motor, Others Form Consortium to Develop Electrical Steel for EVs

The consortium consists of: POSCO, Hyundai Motor Co., SL Corp., Polepair Electric, RIST, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), the University of Ulsan, Pukyong National University and the Korea Metal Materials Research Association (KOMERA).

The companies said the purpose of the research and development (R&D) project is to create manufacturing technologies for “6.5% Silicon-content Wide Electrical Steel Sheets,” which will be used in motors.

“We will concentrate our capabilities on developing high-value-added, advanced materials and component technologies that enhance energy efficiency, while maximizing the synergy among industry, academia and research institutes,” said Cho Myung-jong, head of Future Steel R&D Center at POSCO.

After the initial meeting, the organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an integrated R&D system which spans the entire value chain. Through this, they hope to not just develop, but also verify the practical applicability of the new steel in EV drive motors, the companies said.
