Posco, Korea East-West Power to Process Household Waste into Energy
06/09/2010 - Posco signed an MOU with Korea East-West Power to jointly promote a private investment project for a facility that will process household waste into energy. Posco first started such projects in 2007 by signing an MOU with the Busan City.
Posco recently signed an MOU with Korea East-West Power to jointly promote a private investment project for a facility that will process household waste into energy.
This project is a new renewable energy business that generates power by processing flammable waste that had been incinerated and buried into energy, and supplies its residual heat created during the process to district heating firms. The process is currently active in European countries, Japan, and the U.S.

Korea East-West Power is one of five companies that branched out from the Korea Electric Power Corp. in 2001. It currently operates a power plant generating a total of 9509 MW.
Posco says that the two companies can expand cooperation as Korea East-West Power has recently been active in thermal power generation, combined cycle power generation, and pumped storage, as well as overseas projects involving wind power, solar power, small hydro power, and tidal current power generation.
Posco first started projects on generating energy from household waste and the specific power generation business in 2007 by signing an MOU with the Busan City.
Posco E&E was established last year to focus on the project of processing waste into energy. It plans to start construction of a cogeneration plant that burns household waste as a fuel within the Saenggok landfill in Busan this September.
Posco also signed MOUs with the Pohang city and Korea District Heating Corp. to invest in power generation facilities utilizing household waste.
Through this project to process household waste into energy until 2018, Posco says it will secure up to 1.16 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions rights annually and 200 MW of rights for Renewable Portfolio Standard.
