Posco Awarded Technology Patents at Posco Guangdong, ZPSS

Posco Guangdong recently acquired a utility patent from Chinese patent authorities for the company’s Deactivator Cycle Supplying System and Color Steel Drying & Cooling Device.

Development of the Deactivator Cycle Supplying System, which took place from September to November 2009, was spearheaded by six QSS Improvement Leaders. The new method, an innovative approach to solving chronic issues, features adoption of a control approach in the color steel manufacturing stage. The system prevents inactive agents (Deactivators), which enables the process to provide a steady liquid supply.

The Color Steel Drying & Cooling Device, a new facility perfected by QSS Improvement Leaders, features the addition of two heat exchanger units that help to provide fresh air circulation in the drying ovens and contribute to significantly lower steel surface temperatures. By replacing wind power equivalent to 90 kWh, the company was able to reduce annual energy use to 450,000 kWh, saving energy costs worth 280,000 RMB.

The two patents were acquired after a ten to twelve month review period.

Posco also reports that Zhangjiagang Pohang Stainless Steel Co. Ltd. (ZPSS) has now filed six technology patent applications since establishing a dedicated team for overseeing intellectual property in 2008.

Patents include Ferronickel Smelt Technology using nickel-oxide ore and stainless steel slag; Blast Furnace Smelt Technology using nickel-oxide ore; and Stainless Steel Technology using high phosphorus nickel chromium pig iron, resulting in an Austenitic type of Stainless Steel with low nickel.

The company noted that the patents are representatives of the company’s innovations in material, steelmaking and new product technologies, contributing to the company’s reputation as a technologically advanced player.
