Posco Begins Hot Run on Mexican CGL
06/18/2009 - Posco’s new Posco-Mexico Continuous Galvanizing Line began commercial operation on June 4.
Posco’s new Posco-Mexico Continuous Galvanizing Line began a hot run—commercial operation—on June 4.
Located in eastern Mexico in the vicinity of Altamira Port in Tamaulipas, the new continuous galvanizing line will be Posco’s first overseas base from which it will supply quality sheets for automotive applications. The line began a cold run on April 1, with equipment stabilization tests, load tests, and full-auto operation tests taking place over the past two months. Posco started building the line in September 2007.
Posco said that the facility’s individual functions would be fine-tuned during the hot run, while the production line is operated normally. In addition, local staff members will be trained in coordination skills, and tests will continue on the quality stabilization for galvanized steel will continue.

“Despite the scorching weather, with the temperature going over 40°C, dispatched staff members and local employees are doing their best in the hope that our efforts can help pave the way for the Mexico CGL’s success, which will contribute to Posco’s global success,” said a company official. “Our goal is to produce galvanized products that are as good as those produced at Posco headquarters,” he added.
Posco said that Mexico, which offers a relatively cheap labor force, has attracted a number of global automakers including GM, Volkswagen, Renault, and Nissan, as well as more than 1000 parts suppliers such as AutoTech and Benteler. The nation currently produces two million cars per year.
Posco began operating facilities in Puebla and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in March 2007. Each plant has the capacity to produce 170,000 tons of auto steel sheets annually. Completion of the new CGL will increase Posco’s annual steel production capacity in Mexico to 400,000 tons per year. Posco said that its capacity to supply quality automobile sheets to North, Central, and South America will help to strengthen its status as a competitive global auto sheet supplier.
Posco-Mexico said that it plans to hold a ceremony later this summer for completion of the CGL, with Mexican President Felipe Calderon scheduled to attend.
