Posco Boosts Social Contribution Activities in Africa

Posco recently launched its social contribution activities in African countries such as Zimbabwe and Mozambique with a ceremony for the completion of Children’s Development Center and groundbreaking for the Agricultural Training Institute, in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.

In its efforts to become a total materials company, Posco is actively seeking to make investments in Africa to secure resources and has also made efforts over the past year for social contribution activities.

The 363-m2 Children`s Development Center was built to provide basic education and health care to children who suffer from poverty and AIDS. The center also plans to provide a program to improve the understanding of child rearing to parents of poor children and local leaders.

Nearly 200 people participated in the ceremony for completion of the Children’s Development Center, including Director Ki-jin Sohn from Posco’s Social Contribution Office; Korean Ambassador to Zimbabwe Gwang-cheol Ryu and his wife; Jae-heung Cho, Chairman of Zimbabwe Food for the Hungry International; Chombo, Zimbabwean minister for central and local governments and construction; Governor Chigwedere; and lawmaker Chihota.

Posco also broke ground for the Agricultural Training Institute building next to the children’s center, where the company plans to teach advanced agricultural skills and foster around 100 agricultural leaders through the institute. Highly profitable crops cultivated in the collective farm will be used to improve the self-reliance competency of AIDS patients.

Posco will open the first agricultural training institute in Mozambique. It plans to keep agricultural machines such as tractors and rice-planting machines in a building Korea International Cooperation Agency provided in 2008 and teach the latest agricultural skills to around 50 students. Agricultural leaders who learn advanced agricultural skills can continue their learning through collective farms provided by the Mozambican government.

Based on its social contribution activities in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Posco is also planning to expand social contributions to Ethiopia by creating a New Community Movement model village, fixing houses and tackling poverty through the supply of super-cones.

In the meantime, Posco also installed an exclusive African organization in 2010 and has continuously sought for investment opportunities into resources in Africa. In support of this effort, Chairman Joon-yang Chung visited Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, DR Congo and Ethiopia for nine days last summer to establish mutual cooperative relationships to secure resources and develop business in each country. Posco plans to establish foundations for self-supporting communities and focus on fostering talents.
