04/07/2011 - Posco recently completed construction of a new thick steel plate plant in Gwangyang Steelworks that will make the company the largest steel plate producer with an annual production capacity of 7 million tons.
Posco recently completed the construction of a new thick steel plate plant in Gwangyang Steelworks.
The company said that completion of this plant has made Posco the largest steel plate producer with an annual production capacity of 7 million tons. Until last year, JFE Steel held the world`s largest thick steel plate manufacturing capacity of 5.5 million tons.
The Gwangyang Steelworks thick steel plate plant, which started construction in August 2008, was designed for highly efficient energy usage. The thick steel plate rolling plant was constructed adjacent to the steelmaking plant, from which slabs or thick steel plates are delivered. The close physical proximity helps to minimize logistics costs, manufacturing time and unit fuel usage per slab.
Last year’s domestic thick steel plate demand was approximately 11 million tonnes, of which about 4 million tons relied on imports. Posco expects the new steel plate plant will allow it to reduce imports by 2.7 million, forecasted to equal approximately 1 trillion KRW annual in import replacement effects.
At the ceremony, Chairman Chung emphasized, “Posco has become an undisputed world’s largest steel plate manufacturer with the completion of this thick steel plate plant in Gwangyang. This factory will relieve supply shortages in domestic industries such as shipbuilding, and contribute to increasing global competitiveness of clients by providing the world`s best quality thick steel plates efficiently when needed.”
