Posco has developed and will soon begin mass production of what the company claims is the world’s first environment-friendly Bismuth (Bi) based, lead-free cutting steel.
Free-cutting steels, which are high in strength but easy to cut, are typically produced in the form of long steel wire rods, round, thin, and long in form. Until now, free cutting steel contained lead (Pb), which imparted superior processability. However, the possibility that potentially fatal levels of lead could accumulate in the body of workers during processing inspired the company to develop an alternative solution that did not compromise the health of its workers.

Until now, free cutting steel contained lead (Pb), which imparted superior processability. However, the possibility that potentially fatal levels of lead could accumulate in the body of workers during processing inspired the company to develop an alternative solution that did not compromise the health of its workers.
Accordingly, Posco started product development of an alternative type of free-cutting steel in 2005. By adding Bi, which is used in digestive medicine, drinks, and cosmetics, the company was able to produce highly processable lead-free cutting steel. As a result, the company has now developed and is preparing to mass produce its new Bi-free cutting steel that is harmless to the body and environment friendly.
Bi-free cutting steel was registered as official material for TV designs after receiving quality certification from LG Electronics, completing application tests with the first supply in August. The material will be applied to all TV products manufactured by LG Electronics beginning in the new year.
