Posco Further Expands Asia Fellowship

Posco TJ Park Foundation recently conferred fellowship certificates on 59 Asian students from 11 countries that were selected for scholarship in Korea.

Over 100 eminent figures from diplomatic and academic circles took part in the award ceremony, including Foundation Chairman Ku-Taek Lee; Geeta Parthasarathi, Indian Ambassador to Korea; and Cheol Park, President of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, which is a university in partnership with the Posco Asian Fellowship.

The Posco Asian Fellowship aims to promote mutual exchanges and cooperation among fast-developing Asian countries, with the fellowship business for Asian students studying in Korea as one of its major projects. The fellowship invites Asian undergraduates from prestigious universities and assists them in studying the renowned graduate courses in Korea.

The number of recipients has been expanded from 27 students in 2006 to 59 students this year, and the number of them is expected to increase to 70 from next year. Selected students receive tuition on the master’s course plus living expenses for 2 years. A total of 900 million won will be granted this year and 1.3 billion from next year.

The selected students this year graduated from Asia’s leading universities, such as Delhi University in India, Beijing University in China, University of Karachi in Pakistan, University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Uzbekistan, National University of Mongolia, Thammasat University in Thailand, University of Indonesia, Kazakh National University in Kazakhstan, and Loyal University of Management and Economics in Cambodia.

These students are to study in the eight graduate schools, which are in partnership with the Asian Fellowship program of the Posco TJ Park Foundation, including Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, Sogang University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, POSTECH, KDI School, and the GIST. Students will be nurtured to develop talented workers who can understand Korea and Posco. Students will eventually help to promote friendly relationships between Korea and each country, by experiencing Korea’s natural surroundings and economic development through learning the Korean language, culture, and history.

During the ceremony, Chairman Ku-Taek Lee welcomed the students and congratulated them on being selected as the Posco Asian students studying in Korea of 2007 after the fierce competition. He said that the world is now looking at Asia with renewed eyes in the 21st century, so the students who came from 11 countries should keep in mind that they will be leading their nations in Asia. He also encouraged students to become leaders of the next generation by focusing on their studies, building up various experiences in Korea, and fostering their global perspective.
