Posco Starts Construction of Continuous Galvanizing Line in Guangdong, China
03/29/2011 - Posco recently celebrated the start of construction for a new 450,000 tonnes/year Continuous Galvanizing Line located in the City of Foshan, Guangdong Province, China.
Posco recently celebrated the start of construction for a new Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) factory. The new CGL, which will have an annual production scale of 450,000 tonnes, will be located in the City of Foshan, Guangdong Province, China.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, which was attended by approximately 200 people, Chairman Joon-yang Chung said, “Just like how Posco-Guangdong, we set up in Guangdong in 1997, has contributed to the development of the region as a global Mecca for home appliances, this continuous galvanized steel plate factory will help Guangdong take a leap forward as a center for the automobile and components industries.”
The factory — Posco’s first high-end automobile steel plate factory in China — is planned for completion in January 2012. It will be used to produce galvanized steel and galvannealed steel for sales in the China market. Materials needed for production will be supplied by Gwangyang Steelworks, etc.
Since establishing a galvanized steel plate factory for construction in China, Posco has been building stainless and electric steel plate factories depending on the country’s industry maturity. As China has leaped up as an automotive stronghold, Posco has started construction of the automobile steel plate factory to proactively lead the local market.
China has maintained its leading position in automotive manufacturing since 2009. The region around Guangdong Province is an extra-large economic area with a population of more than one hundred million. Major automobile factories, which include BYD (famous for its electric cars), Liuzhou GM, Guangzhou Toyota, Guangzhou Honda and Dongfeng Nissan, represent 25% of China`s automobile production.
The City of Foshan has particularly good infrastructure conditions such as electricity and roads, and offers a great location, being 49km from Guangzhou, which is one of the largest commerce areas in China, as well as 120km from Hong Kong.
Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, Chairman Joon-yang Chung, Korean Ambassador to China U-ik Ryu, Guangdong Party Secretary Wang Yang, Governor Huang Huahua of Guangdong, and others entered into a memorandum of understanding for strategic cooperation in the steel, electric automobiles and green city development fields.
Accordingly, Posco expects to participate with investing companies including Posco E&C, Posco ICT and Posco Power in various projects that the Guangdong Province is carrying out.
