Posco has distributed smartphones to its directors and executive officers, enabling the users to perform multiple tasks such as send e-mails, pay expenses, check schedules, and even search for people.
The company plans to add more functions in the future, and says that mobile technologies will also be used in its manufacturing businesses to cover shipping, operation control, and safety control. The entire shipping process of steel products with RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags will consequently be automated, according to Posco.
In addition, GPS and navigation solutions will be provided for shipping vehicles operated by the company. For better system management, Posco says that related employees will be able to make sure that system operators or mechanics are providing the right services through their PDAs on a real-time basis.

In the area of safety control, the company anticipates risk factors will be spotted in advance through PDAs; safety staff will be able to report the results of their safety inspections on a real-time base. A shortened safety inspection cycle is expected to enhance overall safety at the company’s various manufacturing facilities.
Posco discussed these issues at a recent workshop hosted by the company’s chief operating officer and attended by representatives of headquarters and two steelworks. Posco will follow-up on what was agreed upon at the event in future planning sessions; the aforementioned plans are scheduled to be completed in 2012.
