Posco-VHPC Begins Construction on Second Plant

Posco broke ground on December 17 for the construction of its second plant, which will process stainless steel and have an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes, at Posco-VHPC in Vung Tau, Dong Nai Province, Vietnam.

Scheduled to be completed in June 2010, the plant will have master coil-cutting equipment such as slitting and shearing lines.

The company’s first facility, which has an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes, was built in March last year in the industrial complex located near Ho Chi Minh City.

The steelmaker expects the newest facility to help meet the expected growth of production and sales at Posco-VST (Vietnam Stainless Steel) as well as become a base to expand STS product sales to other Southeast Asian countries.

Guests at the groundbreaking ceremony included Suh Young-sea, the center manager of the Stainless Steel Marketing Department, the chief of the Dong Nai provincial administrative committee for the industrial complex, and representatives from local customer companies.

Posco says that it is currently gearing up to establish global units and expand its market in Southeast Asia. The company took over Asia Stainless Corp., a Vietnamese cold-rolled steelmaker, in July of this year, and it completed the region’s largest cold-rolling steel plant in the Phu My Industrial Complex in October.
