Primetals Technologies and Nakata Upgrade Cutoff Saw for U.S. Tubular Products Supplier
09/11/2025 - Primetals Technologies and Nakata Mfg. have successfully upgraded the automation and drives system for a 12-inch Nakata flying cutoff machine at a tubular products supplier in the southeastern U.S.
The companies said the project included design, installation and commissioning of a new solution featuring an advanced Siemens programmable logic controller (PLC) with safety functions and drives. Now, the plant can operate the machine more safely and efficiently while increasing its operational lifetime.
Nakata said the PLC safety functionality includes the application of access control devices on safety gates around the machine perimeter and the implementation of functional safety through the PROFIsafe protocol over the PROFINET communication network with Siemens Sinamics drives.
Nakata’s automation also uses edge computing so each application can run on a virtualized system that can be migrated to any other platform, allowing easier access for support. It also provides a framework for future system expansion including cloud computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence.
Nakata supplied the proprietary information required to engineer the new system while Primetals Technologies contributed the local expertise to ensure engineering and equipment met U.S. standards.
Primetals Technologies said it will provide ongoing maintenance services support from its location in Alpharetta, Ga., USA.
The project was completed as scheduled and the machine has returned to successful operation and production, the companies said.
