Rautaruukki to Strengthen Service Centre Operations in St Petersburg

Rautaruukki (Ruukki) has announced plans to increase the capacity of its service centre in St. Petersburg to meet growing demand in Russia. The expansion will feature installation of a new cut-to-length line as well as the modernization of existing machinery at the Parnas service centre in northern St Petersburg.

The expansion will enable Ruukki to provide a comprehensive range of cut-to-length and slitting services—offerings that could be particularly important for serving light engineering customers who relocate their production to the St Petersburg area.

“A comprehensive range of prefabrication services, local personnel, and prompt delivery times give our customers the chance to focus on their own core business, said Olavi Huhtala, President, Ruukki Metals. According to the company, Russia--an attractive, growing neighboring market—still has not attracted serious competition in service centre operations, despite the growing market.

Ruukki will relocate the production of roofing products, which has been fairly minor, to Finland to help free up the space that it needs for growing its service centre operations in St Petersburg.

The new cut-to-length line at the Parnas service centre is scheduled to start up in autumn 2008.

Rautaruukki (Ruukki) supplies metal-based components, systems, and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries, offering a wide selection of metal products and services. Rautaruukki has operations in 24 countries and employs 14,600 people. Net sales in 2007 totaled EUR 3.9 billion.

Ruukki established its first production unit in Russia in the mid-1990s, and opened the Parnas service centre in 2001. In addition to St Petersburg and Moscow, Ruukki has sales operations in a number of Russian growth centers. Ruukki has about 2,100 employees in Russia.
