Research Team Says It Has Developed a Formable 2 GPa Steel
08/25/2017 - A University of Hong Kong professor and a team of mechanical engineers say they have created a new ultra-high-strength steel that can be made through conventional process routes.
According the team, the manganese steel has a yield strength of 2.2 GPa and a uniform elongation of 16%.
The steel was created through a process they’ve dubbed D&P, short for deformed and partitioned. The steel consists of manganese, carbon, aluminum and vanadium. The process to make it utilizes cold rolling and low-temperature tempering.
The team describes the steel and the process in the journal Science.
