Ruukki Smart Roof a Candidate for Sweden’s Innovation of the Year

Ruukki’s smart roof has been ranked as being among the most significant innovations in Sweden’s construction industry, and is a candidate for “Innovation of the Year”, which will be announced as part of the Nordbygg 2012 trade fair in Stockholm.

Ruukki’s smart roof features sensors fitted onto the roof that detect changes in load. This information is transmitted from the measurement sensors via a wireless internet router and directed to a mobile phone or email. The technology developed by Ruukki also provides up-to-date information about roof loading and changes in loading during the required period.

”We have developed a practical solution to improve the safety of buildings, especially at northern latitudes, where the impact of a snow load on a roof can change quite quickly,” said Ruukki Senior Vice President Jouni Metsämäki.

In addition to increasing safety, the Ruukki smart roof also helps to reduce needless clearing of snow from roofs. According to the company, many roofs have been subjected to snow loads over the past several winters that exceeded maximum permitted limits. The smart roof also enables maintenance companies to prioritize assignments according to urgency.

The winner of Sweden’s Innovation of the Year Contest will be announced on March 20 at the Nordbygg 2012 trade fair in Stockholm. Interested parties can vote for Ruukki smart roof on the byggindustrin magazine website at http://www.byggindustrin.com/tavling.
