Ruukki to Supply Steel Piles for Harbor Projects in Western Europe

Ruukki has agreed to a number of steel pipe pile deliveries for harbor construction projects in the Netherlands, France, and the U.K., including for two combi walls for BAVO Kademuren (BAM and Volkerwessels), the subcontractor for the quay walls for the Maasvlakte 2 land reclamation project in the North Sea. The project will enlarge the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands by 2000 hectares.

Ruukki will deliver the primary piles provided with factory-welded interlocks for the combi walls. Ruukki says that its solution is based on a high-strength steel grade and will cut overall project costs by optimizing design to result in reduced amounts of required material.

The large-diameter primary piles will be delivered to the construction site as ready-to-install components. The piles will be made mainly at Ruukki's works in Oulainen, Finland. Its works in Kalajoki, Finland, will deliver the high-strength dolphin monopiles to the Netherlands. The piles can weigh up to 125 tonnes.

Deliveries for all projects will be made mainly during the summer and fall of this year.

"The recent investments made at our Oulainen unit in Finland enable us to make more efficient deliveries of ready-to-install pile components also for large projects. We have invested in automation value adding, which means we have increased the delivery reliability and the quality of components," said Sami Eronen, Senior Vice President, Infrastructure and Northern Europe, Ruukki Construction.

Ruukki has previously been involved in the infrastructure construction of Vuosaari Harbour, Finland's largest harbor. It delivered a total of 23 kilometers of steel pipe piles fitted with rock shoes for the harbor piers. Some of these piles were over 30 meters long. The company also delivered the steel frames and envelope structures for a total of 16 buildings in the harbor area.

Rautaruukki supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and engineering industries. The company employs 11,500 people with operations in 27 countries, and generated net sales totaling EUR 2.0 billion in 2009. The corporation uses the marketing name Ruukki.
