SDI Foundation Pledges US$2 Million to Pellegrino Student Design Center
06/25/2025 - Trine University announced it has received a US$2 million pledge from the Steel Dynamics Foundation Inc. for its new John and Mary Pellegrino Student Design Center.
The university said that the project fabrication space will be named Steel Dynamics Innovation Lab in honor of the foundation’s support.
“This new facility will allow Trine University engineering students to gain hands-on experience with even more sophisticated design projects and will provide opportunities for local high school students and residents to enhance essential skills,” said Mark Millett, chairman and chief executive officer of SDI.
The US$15 million, 22,000 sq. ft. Pellegrino Student Design Center will have a robotics lab, aeronautics lab, powertrain lab and others. More than 8,000 sq. ft. of project fabrication space allows for more and larger projects to be completed by senior teams in the Allen School of Engineering and Computing.
The center will also include US$1.5 million of design and fabrication equipment to meet the needs of industry partners and student teams. Trine University said this will allow it to expand workforce training opportunities for nearby high schools and businesses.
“For many years, the SDI Foundation has generously supported Trine University, and we’re grateful for their continued investment in our efforts to equip students and members of the community with the skills to lead, succeed and serve,” said Earl D. Brooks II, Trine University president.
The SDI Foundation has also supported the Steel Dynamics Inc. Center for Engineering and Computing, the Brooks College of Health Professions, the Steel Dynamics Inc./Keith E. Busse Athletic and Recreation Center and the Thunder Ice Arena. It funded a scholarship program at Trine, supports its annual Scholarship Gala, and provides internships, co-op and employment opportunities to its students.
The university said the building is expected to be completed in about 16 months.
