Siemens Commissions New Plate Mill for Wuyang Iron and Steel

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies recently commissioned a new 4100-millimeter plate mill on the premises of Wuyang Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., China, in only ten days. The new rolling mill will boost the previous system's capacity from one million tonnes to 1.6 million tonnes of steel plate per year, a 60% increase.

Siemens supplied the plate mill with a new roughing stand with a rolling load of 8600 tonnes, hydraulic gauge control cylinders, and a Mae West work roll balance system. Siemens’ scope of supplies also included core mechanical components and the basic and process automation systems for the new roughing stand, as well as a new walking beam cooling bed. Siemens was also responsible for design of the mechanical equipment, quality monitoring of the equipment parts manufactured in China, and supervision of installation, as well as training and commissioning.

Wuyang Iron and Steel will use its new rolling mill to produce steel plates such as carbon structural steel, HSLA structural steel, shipbuilding plate, low alloy structural steel, pipeline plate, boiler plate and pressure vessel plate for shipbuilding, pipe, boiler production industries and high-strength grades for the construction industry. The mill will be capable of producing 900 to 3600 millimeter wide plate with thicknesses ranging from 6 to 150 millimeters.
