Feralpi Siderurgica SpA has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for a new intermediate mill for its rebar rolling mill No. 1. The plant will be able to roll billets with a larger cross-section when the modernization project is completed in fall 2010.
Feralpi Siderurgica runs an electric arc furnace-based minimill meltshop with two rolling mills at its Lonato location in Brescia province, Italy. Rolling mill No. 1 has an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes of rebars. The diameter of the rolled products ranges from 12 to 40 mm.
Siemens is supplying a new intermediate mill, which includes two RedRing rolling stands laid out in an H-V arrangement and the associated hydraulic valve panels. The new equipment will enable the rolling mill to handle larger billets with a square cross-section of up to 160 mm, which Siemens says will increase output, improve cost efficiency, and help Feralpi to expand its range of products.
The rolling mill will also be fitted with an electromagnetic braking system on the inlet side of the cooling bed, which will allow for uniform braking of the rolling stock during multi-slit operation. Siemens will also provide consulting services for the installation and commissioning of the new intermediate mill, and it will perform a “CE” compliance revision of the entire Rolling mill No. 1.
