Siemens to Equip 3rd Tandem Pickling Line for Wisco

Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Corp (Wisco) of China has placed an order with the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) to equip the new, five-stand coupled tandem pickling line No. 3 with mechanical equipment, drive and automation systems, and technological controls. The order is valued at around 25 million Euros.

The new equipment in the cold rolling complex is designed for the production of various grades, from low carbon to high-strength steel grades for the automotive industry. For the tandem pickling line, Siemens will supply the automation plus hydraulic automatic gauge control systems for the 6-high mill stands. Automated on the basis of “Siroll CM,” the plant’s technological control systems and process automation will include a pickling model and the rolling process models. The thickness control system will be based on an advanced mass-flow concept that will ensure reaching the tight tolerances by customers, e. g. in the automotive industry.

The process automation system includes an online rolling process control feature that calculates setpoints based on analytical mathematical models during ongoing production. These setpoints serve as the operating parameters of the rolling machine. Self-learning neuronal networks carry out fine adaptation of the models to the respective production conditions, thus enabling flexible production planning. Optimized interaction of exact process models and the fast-acting closed-loop control system are applied to roll even critical sections of strip at the welds - in fully automatic mode with minimal loss of time and material. This is an essential prerequisite for the efficient operation of such plants.

The order also includes operator control and visualization equipment with operator-friendly process and plant diagnostic functions. Siemens will also supervise assembly and installation of all the components, in addition to commissioning, and will train the customer's personnel.

Previously, Siemens supplied important components for Wisco’s two other tandem pickling lines. The new, third tandem pickling line will allow Wisco to increase its annual production capacity by nearly two million tonnes. It is scheduled to start operation in the spring of 2009.

Wuhan Iron & Steel Corp. produces twenty million tonnes of iron and steel per year, making it one of the leading producers in China.

Metals Technologies (MT), a division of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) Group, is one of the world's leading engineering and plant-building companies for the iron and steel industry as well as for the flat-rolling sector of the aluminum industry and for open-cast mining. MT, which was created from the integration of Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau, Linz/Austria, plus the electrical engineering product business and automation solutions of Siemens, provides a comprehensive range of supplies and services for all related technological processes and integrated automation solutions for the entire life-cycle of metallurgical plants.

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is the integrator of systems and solutions for industrial and infrastructure facilities and global service provider for the plant and projects business covering planning, installation, operation and the entire life cycle.
