Siemens to Modernize Baosteel EAF with RCB System

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (Baosteel), China, has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to equip an electric arc furnace in its Shanghai factory with a Refining Combined Burner (RCB) system. The order volume is in the single-digit million euro range.

Baosteel group’s aim of this modernization project is to increase furnace productivity while also reducing its energy consumption. According to Siemens, installation of its RCB system will help to reduce electrical energy consumption per tonne of steel by up to 10%. The system is also said to help reduce tapping times sufficiently that EAF productivity can be increased by more than 6%.

Siemens’ scope of supply for the project includes RC-Burners, modular front plates, and valve stands for gas, oxygen and nitrogen. Siemens will also provide the associated automation technology.

The modernized electric arc furnace will resume production with the new RCB System after a short down time in 2010.

Baosteel Group is the largest steel producer in China.
