Siemens to Provide Automation Drive, Equipment for Dajiang Steel Tandem Mill
04/14/2008 - Jiangsu Dajiang Metal Material contracts Siemens Metals Technologies to supply all the automation and drive equipment for rebuilding a five-stand continuous tandem mill relocated from the U.S.
Jiangsu Dajiang Metal Material Co. Ltd. (Dajiang Steel), China, has contracted Siemens Metals Technologies to supply all the automation and drive equipment for rebuilding a five-stand continuous tandem mill.
Dajiang Steel is currently building a new 1250-millimeter wide cold rolling mill in the province of Jiangsu (about 200 kilometers west of Shanghai) with an annual capacity of one million tonnes. Dajiang Steel intends to use the new plant to expand its production of flat steel products. Mainly low-alloy carbon steels—also for tinplate manufacture—are to be rolled at the mill.
The plant will consist of a re-built, used rolling mill bought in the U.S., supplemented with equipment for continuous rolling. Mechanical components will be installed by a Chinese company.
For the tandem mill’s main drives, Siemens will supply Sinamics S120 type DC link converters in a twin-drive configuration. The plant will be automated on the basis of the “Siroll CM” concept and, in addition to the technological controls, will also include the entire process automation system. The latter includes thickness control in accordance with the advanced mass-flow concept, online rolling-process control on the basis of analytical mathematical models and, finally, self-learning neural networks. For flatness measurement and control, the non-contact Siflat system will be used.
Siemens’ scope of supply also includes new operator control and visualization equipment with user-friendly process and plant diagnostic functions. Siemens will supervise assembly, installation of all components, and commissioning, and will also provide training.
The continuous tandem mill is to start production at the end of 2009.
