Siemens to Supply Drives, Automation for New Plate Mill at Ningbo

Chinese steel producer Ningbo Iron and Steel Co. recently awarded Siemens a contract to engineer and supply the drive and automation systems for a new 4.3-meter plate mill. All the systems and components used are part of Siemens’ Siroll PM Solution, which was specially developed for plate mills.

Ningbo Iron and Steel is currently building a new plate mill for manufacturing metal plates with widths of up to 4.3 meters, mainly intended for use in shipbuilding. With an annual capacity of 1.6 million tonnes of plate metal, the new plant will incorporate two walking-beam furnaces, a two-stand rolling mill, hot plate leveler, cooling beds, shearing section and a finishing shop.

Siemens is responsible for engineering and supplying drives and automation for the rolling mill. The scope of supply also includes all process models for the rolling mill and the hot leveler, the entire automation and instrumentation, and a material tracking system from the furnace discharge down to the shearing section. The main motors of the mill will be powered by Sinamics SM 150 DC link converters.

Siemens Ltd. China will ensure efficient after-sales services for the plant. Commissioning of the rolling mill is scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
