Siemens to Supply Second 5-Meter Plate Mill for Shagang

Siemens Metals Technologies has signed a second 5.0-meter-wide plate mill contract with Shagang Wide Plate Mills Co. Ltd., Zhangjiagang, China. The plate mill will be a copy of Shagang's existing 5.0-meter-wide plate mill, which went into production in January 2007.

With a rolling load capability of up to 10,000 tonnes, the new mill stand will incorporate hydraulic gauge control and heavy work roll bending. An attached edger will ensure accurate width control and high plate yield. Siemens will also install a Mulpic system on the exit of the mill stand to provide the accelerated cooling necessary for production of high strength plate, and a fully hydraulic nine-roll leveler will be installed ahead of the cooling beds to optimize plate flatness.

The plant layout for the new mill will incorporate two shear lines, which will enable the facility to achieve production levels of 1.8 million tonnes/year. Production will focus on plate for China’s shipbuilding, line pipe, and construction industries.

Siemens’ scope of supply includes design of the mechanical equipment, plus supply of key mechanical components and quality supervision of Chinese-manufactured equipment. Siemens will also supply motors and drives for the key process equipment, including the mill stand, and Level 1 and Level 2 automation for the complete mill line. Siemens will also be responsible for supervision of equipment installation and commissioning.

Shagang Wide plate Mill Co. Ltd. is part of the Jiangsu Shagang Group, which currently produces 16 million tonnes of steel per annum, making it one of China’s leading steel producers. This investment is part of the Jiangsu Shagang Group’s policy of increasing production of high-valued-added flat products.

When the new mill starts production in 2009, Shagang will become the first plate producer in the world to operate two 5.0-meter-wide mills on one integrated site.
