Siemens to Supply Sinter Plant to Jindal Steel & Power

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL) placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to supply a new sinter plant on a process turnkey basis. The project is part of a new integrated steelworks currently under construction at Patratu, Ramgarh District, State of Jharkhand.

The sinter strand will have a suction area of 490 m2, and the plant will be capable of producing approximately 5 million tonnes of high-quality sinter per year. The order volume for Siemens is a two-digit million euro figure. Plant start-up is scheduled for mid-2013.

To meet the increasing demands for steel in India, JSPL is currently erecting a new 3.5 million tonnes-per-annum steelworks in the eastern Indian city of Patratu. The Siemens VAI supply scope for the new sinter plant includes basic engineering for the overall sinter plant, basic and detail engineering for process equipment and electrics, Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, and spare parts. Advisory services for customer procurement, erection, installation, start-up and commissioning also will be provided. Personnel training is part of the project as well.

The project will be jointly implemented by Siemens VAI company headquarters in Linz, Austria, and locally by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies Private Ltd in Kolkata, India.

Siemens VAI will install several solutions and systems including an Intensive Mixing and Granulation System (IMGS) for raw material handling and preparation, which will enable more than 60% of the raw mix to be comprised of low-cost pellet feed with a grain size of less than 100 microns. A Siemens VAI-developed Selective Waste Gas Recirculation System will allow approximately 40% of the sinter offgas to be recirculated to the process. This will lower the offgas volume flowing to the stack, thereby allowing the required dimensions of the downstream offgas-treatment facilities to be decreased, according to the company.

The Simetal Sinter VAiron process-optimization system also will be installed, contributing to an improved control of the burn-through point, return-fines balance, sinter basicity and coke rate, etc. It will also perform a host of other Level 2 functionalities.

Previous projects implemented by Siemens VAI for JSPL include the installation of a single-strand slab caster and a 5-m plate mill at the company's Angul steelworks, and the supply of a combi-caster at the Raigarh steelworks. The latter was the first caster in the world capable of casting beam-blanks, blooms, and rounds, according to Siemens VAI. It is also supplying a blast furnace with an inner volume of more than 4000 m3 for the Patratu project.
