Siemens VAI Modernize Coilers for Severstal Hot Rolling Mill
08/20/2008 - Siemens VAI Metal Technologies will modernize the coilers of OAO Severstal’s Tscherepowez hot rolling mill to enable coiling of high-strength steel, up to and including X100 tubular steels.
Siemens VAI Metal Technologies has received an order from Russian steel producer OAO Severstal to modernize the coilers of Hot Rolling Mill No. 2 at the company's Tscherepowez location. The upgrade, which will enable coiling of high-strength steel, up to and including X100 tubular steels, is valued in the two-digit million Euro range.
Severstal produces around six million tonnes of strip steel every year in the Tscherepowez facility’s Hot Rolling Mill No. 2. By modernizing the coilers, the facility is targeting an expanded product range, enhanced product quality and, increased productivity and plant availability.
The central feature of the project is the installation of two Siemens VAI Power Coilers as the replacement for coilers 4 and 5. With four pressure rollers, of which the first is a dual roller unit, the Power Coiler technology will enable coiling of thick and high-strength steels up to X100 tubular steel.
Siemens will renew the lateral guides of Coiler No. 4, and install a new roller table, including lateral guides, ahead of Coilers No. 5 and 6. In addition, Coilers No. 4 and 5 will be equipped with fully hydraulic drivers and new coil-removal carriages. The associated electrical equipment and the automation system are also part of the project.
After modernization of the group of coilers and installation of the two new Power Coilers, the Tscherepowez hot rolling mill will be able to produce strips up to a maximum width of 1850 mm and thicknesses of between 1.2 and 25.4 mm.
According to Severstal’s requirements, the installation is scheduled to take place in 2010. The installation will follow two successful Power Coiler start-ups at the ArcelorMittal facilities in Fos sur Mer, France, and in Cracow, Poland.

Siemens VAI and Severstal have enjoyed close cooperation for more than 20 years. In June this year, Severstal nominated Siemens for the “Long-standing Partnership” award as part of the “Partnership 2008” competition.
Severstal is the second-largest producer of flat steel in Russia.
