Siemens VAI to Expand ArcelorMittal Monlevade LD Steel Works in Brazil

ArcelorMittal Monlevade S.A. has placed an order with Siemens VAI to supply core components for the expansion of the João Monlevade steel mill located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The order includes equipment for an LD (BOF) converter, the hot-metal supply and the associated secondary dust-cleaning systems. The project has a total value of more than 20 million euros.

ArcelorMittal Monlevade is currently carrying out a comprehensive expansion program that will double capacities throughout the entire process chain. In the course of this program both of the existing 130-ton LD (BOF) converter plants will be equipped for parallel operation.

Siemens VAI will design and supply the hot-metal desulfurization station, ladles, deslagging stands, ladle and slag pot transfer cars, and the associated electrical and automation equipment. The material-feeding system will be expanded, and its alloying capacity doubled.

Siemens VAI’s scope of supply also includes two secondary dust-cleaning systems with cleaning capacities of 800,000 and 1,000,000 m3/hour, respectively. The systems will clean offgas from hot-metal desulfurization, the converters, the hot-metal supply and secondary steel refining operations.

Expansion of the João Monlevade steel mill is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
