SMI Amtek to Install Second Forging Press Line

SMI Amtek Crankshaft Pvt. Ltd, a joint-venture company owned by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Metals), Sumitomo Corp., and Amtek Auto Limited (Amtek), has decided to install a second forging press line in order to respond to rapidly growing demand for crankshafts in India.

Located in India, where the automobile industry is growing rapidly, SMI Amtek was started up in April 2010 with a 4000-tonne press line, the No. 1 forging line. The decision to install a second forging line was prompted by increasing customer demand, which now substantially exceeds the production capacity of the No. 1 forging line, which is scheduled to reach full production capacity in the second half of 2012.

The new 5000-tonne forging line will allow SMI Amtek to expand its annual production capacity from the current 800,000 to 2.2 million units. The investment will amount to 1 billion rupees (approximately 1.9 billion yen at a rate of 1 rupee/1.9 yen). The new line will introduce Sumitomo Metals' latest crankshaft forging technologies such as high speed and automation.

As a result of this investment, Sumitomo Metals’ worldwide forged crankshaft supply capacity will increase from 9.3 million to 10.7 million units. Sumitomo Metals aims to capture over 10% of the global share for the forged crankshaft business by performing its unique, competitive monozukuri (manufacturing based on highly skilled craftsmanship) from the perspectives of quality and productivity.

The new forging line, which is scheduled to start operation in November 2012, supports Sumitomo Metals’ goal of achieving over 10% of the global forged crankshaft business. Sumitomo Metals’ supply and sales structure, based in Japan, the United States, China and India, represents annual production capacities of approximately 4 million units, 2.7 million units, 1.8 million units, and 2.2 million units, respectively.

SMI Amtek Crankshaft Pvt. Ltd, a joint-venture company, is owned by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. (40%), Sumitomo Corp. (10%), and Amtek Auto Limited (50%). In addition to the original 4000-tonne press line, the company also operates die-sinking and heat treatment equipment.
