SMS Concast to Modernize Six-Strand Caster for SN Longos Seixal

SN Longos Seixal (Megasa Group), Portugal's largest manufacturer of long steel products, has placed an order with SMS Concast, Switzerland, to modernize its six-strand continuous caster.

SMS Concast will carry out extensive revamping work on the six-strand caster, adding state-of-the-art technologies including new hydraulic oscillators, electromagnetic mold stirrers, and strand guide systems. SMS Concast will also provide primary and secondary cooling systems, torch cutters and an advanced Level 2 automation system for controlling the complete casting process.

The company is currently producing cast sections of 120 x 120 and 130 x 130 mm from the 7-meter radius caster. After the revamp, the machine will be able to cast two new sections of 140 x 140 mm and 160 x 160 mm, respectively. The upgraded caster will also feature CONVEX® technology that will help to ensure optimum metallurgical results for all casting sizes.

This revamp also will enable the caster’s product range to be greatly enhanced in terms of quality. It will be possible to produce high carbon steels for springs and for pre-stressed concrete rebars as well as for cold-heading grades.

SMS Concast’s scope of supply also includes provision of full technical and metallurgical assistance during the erection and commissioning periods. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2010.
