SMS Demag Completes First of Three BOF Upgrades for Tata Steel

March 2007 — SMS Demag AG, Germany, has completed modernization of the first of three converters at Tata Steel Ltd. (previously TISCO, Tata Iron & Steel Co.), Jamshedpur, India.

The converter vessel was equipped with SMS Demag’s patented lamella suspension technology. The new suspension technology also enabled the volume inside the brick lining to be increased to 153 cubic meters, which raised the liquid charge weight from 140 to 170 tonnes.

The converter was equipped with a new four-pinion slip-on gear with frequency-controlled three-phase current motors. The gear unit was also fitted with a pneumatic emergency drive to enable the converter vessel to be safely emptied in the event of power failure.

Commissioning of the remaining two converters will be completed in 2008, which will raise the planned annual production from the current 2.6 million tonnes of steel to 4 million tonnes.
