SMS Demag to Add Roughing Stand to Baosteel Heavy-Plate Mill
12/24/2007 - SMS Demag will supply a new roughing stand for Baosteel’s 5-meter heavy-plate mill in Shanghai.
Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (Baosteel), China, recently placed an order with SMS Demag to supply a new roughing stand for its 5-meter heavy-plate mill in Shanghai.
Originally built by SMS Demag, Baosteel’s heavy-plate mill has been in operation since March 2005. With the new roughing stand, Baosteel will raise the mill’s annual production from 1.4 to 1.8 million tonnes. The new roughing stand will also make it possible to produce plates in thicknesses of up to 400 mm, a size range that is becoming increasingly important for a range of applications such as ship-building. Feedstocks for plates in these gages are blooms of up to 1000 mm thickness.
With a 5100-mm long work-roll barrel, the roughing stand will have a rolling force of 108 mN, like the finishing stand. It will have hydraulic adjustment systems and rapid mechanical roll presetting to enable short reversing times.
A special revamping concept will allow the expansion to take place without non-scheduled stoppages. At the end of 2007, the roller tables upstream and downstream of the roughing stand area will be revamped to enable special-purpose vehicles to remove the hot slabs downstream of the descaler and to re-introduce them upstream of the finishing stand. These measures will allow SMS Demag to completely erect the roughing stand and put it into operation without needing to interrupt production.
The first plate is to be rolled on the new roughing stand in December 2008.
